Aging and Hearing Loss

Aging-and-hearing

Hearing loss has affected over thirty-one million Americans and two-thirds of them are over age 55. Hearing impairment numbers three, immediately following arthritis and hypertension are among the major chronic conditions of the 65 and older groups. In the United States, a full third of people over the age of 50 have a hearing impairment. More than 70 years of age the incidence of hearing impairments rises to almost 50%. Unfortunately, hearing loss is more common than ever in history, but this problem is not primarily caused by gradual listening aging. The growing acceptance of loud noise and loud music has changed our society since 1960.

Hearing instruments have made further technological progress. The most revolutionary advance is probably the "open fit" hearing aids (also called open ear or open canal instruments), which can be used for people with moderately severe hearing losses and that are largely invisible to observers. However, this new design is particularly friendly for seniors with audio-gram properties who experience difficulties with other types of hearing instruments due to the high-frequency and physical handling.

Many older people listen to music, although their enjoyment can suffer from hearing difficulties. Since a typical hearing loss during aging tears takes away more sound from the higher pitch, which is audible for normal listeners, hard hearing increases the volume to make the music more audible, sometimes for other people's discomfort. One problem with this modification is that if the music is louder, lower notations are amplified and some listeners can record as too loud. The only thing that emphasizes is the high priority when such an adjustment is on the TV, radio, or stereo.

Were you aware that hearing loss may decrease your memory? The doctors' research suggests that older people with hearing loss take longer to process spoken messages. This is partly because they spend time and energy trying to understand what is said. Researchers think this effort could affect their memories as well. They tested older adulthood with mild to moderate hearing losses and found that so much cognitive energy was used to make sure that they forgot all about the message. Even if older people could hear the words well enough to re-read them, in comparison with older people with good hearing, they were less likely to remember the words.

Other Influences that Affect Hearing:

A higher level of hearing loss can be exacerbated as a result of exposure to other events or agents that damage our early childhood hearing mechanisms. Noise exposure, illnesses, high fibre, headache, toxic chemicals and medicines, deficiency in blood supply, insufficient oxygen, and genetic influence. While the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has required noisy industries since 1970 to provide ear protection, the partial solution was too late for many people now expected to retire. We live in an industrialized society with apparently omnipresent noise. We've got eyelids that keep the light while we're asleep, but we haven't had eyelids that stop background noise in our homes. Indeed, we are fortunate if we can sit, close our eyes and hear nothing in the quiet safety of the living room.

Improve your Listening and Hearing Skills:

For most of us with hearing loss, it is just pain that we try to overcome or minimize constantly.

We've been looking for acceptance as a separate social entity, not like "hears of hearing." We do so, not by ignoring it, but by trying to reduce its impact on our lives. In fact, we are not trying to make hearing loss an element that defines our personal identity. We use all the technological tools we can, i.e. hearing aid, and other hearsay aids to achieve our goals of continued engagement with society - with our friends, family, jobs, and interests. And to reduce the unavoidable consequences of hearing loss we use various communication strategies.
